It's been a few weeks since the release of Diablo II: Resurrected, and things haven't exactly gone according to plan. In the days immediately following the launch, frequent server problems and locked characters were to be expected; however, server outages and authentication problems have persisted since then. In a new post on the official forums, Blizzard explains what exactly is going on with Diablo II: Resurrected's recurring server issues, as well as what the team is doing to fix it, including the implementation of login queues and a limit on the rate at which players can rapidly create and join games.

The majority of the problem is caused by an overloaded server. An outage that affected servers all over the world was caused by sudden and significant increases in the number of players logging in as well as the number of lobbies they were spawning inside the game. According to Blizzard, the spike in traffic on October 9 was larger than that of the game's launch, and when combined with an update that was rolled out for the game just the day before, it caused the global database for Diablo II: Resurrected to time out. The following day, there was another disruption due to an increase in server traffic. On October 11, a switch between global databases was the cause of yet another server outage, which was followed by another spike in player traffic on October 12, which caused additional problems.

As for why Blizzard's servers appear to be completely unable to meet player demand, the reason has to do with legacy code that was used in the original cheap Diablo 2 resurrected ladder items and is still present in Diablo II: Resurrected, as well as the fact that modern players are very rapidly creating game lobbies, then abandoning them, and then creating new ones. Both of these factors contribute to the fact that Blizzard's servers appear to be completely unable to meet player demand.

According to Blizzard, there was not nearly as much information available on the internet in 2001 regarding how to correctly play Xbox D2R ladder items (Baal runs for experience points, Pindleskin/Ancient Sewers/etc for magic find, etc.). However, in the modern era, a new player can look up any number of amazing content creators who can teach them how to play the game in a variety of different ways. Many of these ways involve a significant amount of database load in the form of rapidly creating, loading, and destroying games. Even though we anticipated this would happen (players creating new characters on new servers and working hard to obtain magic-finding items), we grossly underestimated the breadth of the implications that the beta testing would have for the game.

Blizzard plans to implement a login queue in order to reduce the amount of strain placed on the game's servers. This is being done so that Blizzard has time to diagnose and address issues as they arise. Additionally, this will keep the game's population levels stable, preventing the overall system from experiencing a decline as buy D2 ladder runes has in recent times. The queue will become available to players on PC in the coming days, and an update for consoles will follow shortly after.

In the days ahead, players might occasionally see an error message that reads, "There is a problem communicating with the game servers," when they try to create or join games. According to Blizzard, this will not actually indicate that the Diablo II: Resurrected servers are down. Instead, it will indicate that players are temporarily being limited in their ability to create or join new games in order to reduce strain on the game's database. According to Blizzard, imposing restrictions on the creation of new games is merely a stopgap measure and not a permanent solution. Other fixes will include the separation of important aspects of the game's functionality into separate, more manageable services.

Even though it features updated graphics and a few minor quality-of-life tweaks, Diablo II: Resurrected is a faithful recreation of Blizzard's original classic action role-playing game (RPG).  Although it would appear that Blizzard is currently quite busy ensuring that the game can be accessed online and played, the developer has not ruled out the possibility of adding new content to the game in the form of runewords or news items. The next installment in the Diablo series, which will be developed by Blizzard and titled Diablo IV, has recently gained a new game director but does not yet have a release date.

At this year's BlizzCon, which took place in February, the much-rumored remaster of D2 ladder runes for sale was finally confirmed to be in the works. This particular remaster is more noteworthy than the majority of other reworks due to the fact that  had a significant impact on the development of the modern-day action-RPG, which in turn influenced the development of other RPG franchises such as Destiny and Borderlands. A lot of people who played the first version of the game are excited about the sequel because they saw the classic game brought back with a new look and some changes made to the gameplay loop. However, there is no denying the legacy that  has built since its initial release in the year 2000; as a result, this remaster needs to walk a fine line between providing meaningful updates and preserving the original experience.

Now that the smoke has cleared, we are here to provide a recap of all the information regarding Diablo II: Resurrected that we are currently aware of. During BlizzCon, we were given the opportunity to speak with the game's developers about the process that the team followed in order to create this remaster. In addition to its updated visuals, the resurrected version of the game will feature expanded online functionality as well as a series of quality-of-life improvements that aim to enhance the experience of playing the game while preserving the elements that made the first version what it was. Diablo II: Resurrected will, according to Blizzard, continue to be the same game that players have grown accustomed to enjoying more than twenty years after its initial release.
