Content on TikTok Live could already be restricted by creators, meaning some livestreams wouldn’t show up for under 18s.
The same technology will now be used to allow creators to prevent kids from watching their standard videos on the app.
TikTok says its “strict policies prohibiting nudity, sexual activity, and sexually explicit content” will remain in effect for all creators, including those who limit content to adults only.
This tool, dubbed audience controls, is part of an ongoing effort to further enforce TikTok's policies prohibiting sexually suggestive content. TikTok's community guidelines prohibit nudity, sexual activity, and sexually explicit content. Sexually suggestive content is already restricted from appearing in recommendations on FYPs.
Now creators will be able to restrict "borderline" suggestive content that doesn't violate community guidelines from teenage audiences.
“We’ve already taken significant strides to help ensure their feeds are full of content that is appropriate for them, and these improvements mark an important next step to meet that goal.”
It comes a month after an online safety group claimed some young TikTok users are being shown potentially dangerous content which could encourage eating disorders, self-harm and suicide.
In response to the research, a TikTok spokesperson said: “This activity and the resulting experience do not reflect the real behavior or viewing experiences of real people.
“We consult regularly with health experts, remove violations of our policies, and provide access to supportive resources for anyone in need.
“We understand that playing content is unique to each individual and remain focused on promoting a safe and comfortable space for everyone, including people who choose to share their recovery journeys or educate others about these important topics.”
